About The Program

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Fire Explorer Program is a youth- based program that focuses on the introduction in the fire service and emergency medical services. This program puts an emphasis on education, training, career development, and positive mentoring. Not only will HBFD Explorers gain experience related to the fire and ems service, they will have the opportunity to gain life skills, character development, teamwork and leadership skills.

The HBFD Fire Explorer Program is an official department function that benefits from the Fire Chief and City Council. Although this program is not considered a direct recruitment into the fire department, it does provide unparalleled insight into the operations of the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

The purpose of the Fire Explorer Program is to give young men and women an inside look into the fire service and help these young people make the decision on whether they want to take further steps into pursuing a career as a firefighter.

Once a HBFD Fire Explorer, they will attend mandatory training meetings where they participate in both classroom based training and hands-on manipulative training. Fire Explorers are encouraged to participate in the Ride-Along Program where they are given the opportunity to be assigned to on-duty crews and respond to emergency calls.
